My Greyjoy Lists

I came to the tournament with the following lists:

List 1:

Victarion Commander in Reavers, Nute in Reavers, Asha and Qarl in Trappers, Bowmen, Hedge Knights, NCUs Erik, Rodrik and Wendamyr

List 2:
Balon Commander in Ironmakers, Victarion in Bowmen, Asha in Trappers, Qarl in Silenced Men, NCUs Erik, Wendamyr and Varys

1st game, Clash of Kings, Victarion Greyjoy vs Greatjon Umber:

Opponent list: Greatjon in Bastard’s Girls, Rickon in She-Bears, Mormont Vet in Berzerkers, Warden in Bowmen, Shaggydog, NCUs Ned & Rodrik.

I have to start with this: thank you brilliant people a thousand times for advising me to put Wendamyr in my list. Round 1: Lee moved his bowmen forward, at a safe distance from me. Wendamyr replaces a zone to get a token. 2 tokens and a “Rush of Aggression” later, Hedge Knights charge his bowmen. I start the next round, no more bowmen. Shaggydog doesn’t get out in time, no more Shaggydog (the wolf still managed to take out a rank with 3 wounds on him). So thanks to a small maester, we’re only at round 2 and the two biggest threats are removed.

He then came back a little bit, his She-Bears killing my Victarion unit, which had been massacred by the bowmen before their untimely death (I had a choice between killing the dog or saving the captain, I chose the dog since Vic could come back), and putting his Berserkers in the center, who ended up taking lots of damage from Nute’s reavers. Unfortunately for me, Mormont Vet makes these guys unkillable, so Nute and his men died.

On round 3, Victarion came back, and oh boy did he come back. I deployed him just behind my bowmen to protect them from the upcoming She-Bears charge. The bowmen resisted, and Vic managed to take the She-Bears on the flank. 2 or 3 attacks later, the She-Bears died, and the Iron Captain saw his next target… the berserkers’ flank. OVERRUN! With that last action, the game was basically mine, he only had the Greatjon in Bastard’s Girls left (who did manage to kill the Hedge Knights).

Important note: Lee is probably the unluckiest player I’ve ever seen with Ned Stark… 2 tournament games with him, I think he passed 2 Panic tests thanks to Ned…

End result: 12-6 for Victarion!

2nd game, Dark Wings Dark Words, Victarion Greyjoy vs Renly Baratheon:

Opponent list: Renly in Rose Knights, Brienne in Rose Knights, Champions of the Stag, Wardens, NCUs Margaery, Cortnay & Tycho

Another fun game, 2 Rose Knights is definitely hard to handle! I think I won thanks to both the speed of my units (Hedge Knights and Trappers) and the mission cards, which allowed for different ways to win than plain killing. I put Qarl in front of his Renly, going straight for the objective in an attempt to lure him. Well, it worked, sadly Qarl was not in a good mood: 3 attacks, 3 failed Expert Duellist on Renly, andTrappers unit at the mercy of 2 Rose Knight units… They managed to hold for a surprisingly long time, all things considered, but Qarl did disappoint, especially with the Mission card of “2 more VPs for killing the enemy commander” at that moment…

On the other side, Nute and the Hedge Knights ended up locked in battle with the Wardens, who hold the line for quite a while, thanks to Tycho and their counterstrike. I managed to finish them at last, but the Rose Knights took quick care of my Reavers. In a not subtle at all moment, I sent my Hedge Knights towards the deployment line of my opponent, to complete one of the missions. He caught it and changed the mission, obviously.

On the left side, the Champions of the Stag were facing both the bowmen and Victarion’s unit. These guys are a tough nut to crack, and I only managed to finish them by shifting forward and shooting them in the back, Victarion using his “What is dead may never die” to resist the 8 attacks with Critical Blow of the Champions (Renly’s cards help them tremendously, they work really well with him) and a charge from Brienne’s Rose Knights.

In the end, Renly managed to grab the last objective to score 2 VP, but it was too late and the Greyjoys won the day.

End result: 11-6 for Victarion!

3rd game, Dance with Dragons, Balon Greyjoy vs Euron Greyjoy!

Opponent list: Euron in Silenced Men, Asha and Qarl in Ironmakers, Warsworn in Reapers, Bowmen, NCUs Balon, Erik and Aeron.

Civil war for the first place! (Actually 2 civil wars were happening on the last round, with Starks vs Starks being the second one…)

Very similar lists, both aiming to panic and resist panic, very important for this scenario. Another pretty fun game, with the MVP this time being Victarion attachment in the bowmen: the number of attacks this can give them is quite crazy, and even if on a 4+, with Balon’s cards, it gives some insurance.

We started (and ended) with both Ironmakers units on the flank objectives, both units getting VPs each round. Unfortunately for him, I was getting 2, thanks to mine having Balon inside.

Qarl managed to kill Euron on his first attempt, which was a nice change from the terrible performance of the last game, and was the secondary MVP, dealing free wounds all the time and helping my Silenced Men to finish his very soon. Obviously, I had completely forgotten about Balon NCU, and Euron and his crew came back. Unfortunately for them, the rest of the army was outmatched by the number of attacks I could send his way, with Victarion’s bowmen outshooting his.

In the end, we only had 2 units each left, but Balon’s commander bunker basically won the day!

End result: 11-7 and the Iron Throne for Balon!

Conclusions

It was a fantastically fun tournament, very nice to meet some newcomers and older participants: all my opponents played great (the level keeps getting better tournament after tournament, which is fantastic!) and were all very good sports!

Thanks to SGF Store for organizing it, tournaments are a great way to keep a game afloat (pun intended), and help to make new connections!

See? Silenced Men connecting with each other!

I was very happy with the Greyjoys performance, they really are a fun faction to play with (and against). Victarion commander is probably in my top 3 commanders of all factions, his attack potential is just enormous and makes for a high energy game!
Ended up winning the 2 latest Greyjoy boxes, Heroes 2 and Blacktyde’s Chosen, so I’m very much looking forward to trying these out!

Hope you enjoyed this recap, I will probably try another faction at the next tournament!

Stags, wolves or coin-lovers?
